With a view to ensure road safety and reduce the number of accidents, the Himachal Pradesh police in association with PWD today launched 'Road Accident Data Management System'.
"The system would go a long way in reducing the number of accidents as well as the casualties," IG (headquarter) Zahur Ali Haider Zaidi said.
"This concept required involvement of multiple agencies to get accurate data and good analysis system. The basic idea behind this system is to collect accurate data and analysis to understand the problem and rectification," he said.
RADMS, part of World Bank's funded road project, has been implemented in Shimla and Mandi district on pilot basis.
A workshop was organised under the chairmanship of Transport Minister G.S. Bali on the occasion in which several state government officials spoke about road safety.
Asserting that road safety was top priority for the transport department, Bali said, "We have several constraints, including bad roads but efforts would be made to overcome all the deficiencies."
The project aims to bring international best practice in collecting managing, analysing and using road accident data with the assistance from the United Kingdom's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
Additional Chief Secretary PWD Narender Chauhan said strong will is required to deal with this issue which involves multiple departments.
"We have been talking about roles of PWD, Health, Police departments which are important and vital and the problems are not insurmountable," he said.
