"The Narendra Modi-led government has tried to fulfil one of the commitments whereby every person not only gets financial benefit but he should also live respectably in the society," Singh said while addressing the gathering at EPS Pensioners felicitation programme here.
The government had recently notified the amendment to the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 to provide a minimum monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to beneficiaries under the scheme which is expected to benefit around 32 lakh pensioners across the country for 2014-15.
The minister, who also holds the portfolio of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, MoS in Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Space and Atomic Energy, said the government would have to frame policies while keeping in mind the growing strength of people with 65 years of age and above.
"It is an irony that on one hand, we have 65 per cent of population which is young and on the other hand, the population above 65 years is also growing rapidly," he said.
Taking swipe at previous Congress-led government, the minister said that the NDA government at the Centre would make efforts to finish the work which has been pending for the last 60-65 years.
"I do not believe in criticising. We have to finish work pending for the last 60-65 years... If we indulge in criticising (other political parties), then we will lose our focus from our objective," he said.
