Residents of Kaushambi township near Delhi border have a reason to rejoice as Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) today informed the National Green Tribunal that it has paid Rs 1.17 crore to Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam for construction of sewer lines in the area.
GDA told a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar that as per its directions, the department has paid the amount and it now the responsibility of Nagar Nigam to complete the work within two months.
"Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam shall ensure that construction of the sewer line in accordance with the plan...Is completed within the time stipulated in the order. We direct Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam to file compliance report within 90 days from July 20," the bench said.
Earlier the bench had directed Nagar Nigam to disconnect all sewer lines linked to storm water drains and stop release of untreated sewage from nearby villages in these drains in Kaushambi township within one month.
The directions came while hearing a plea by Kaushambi Apartments Residents Welfare Association (KARWA) which alleged that land sold off by Ghaziabad Development Authority to Yashoda Hospital, Supertech, Raj Residency and others in eastern part of Kaushambi area does not have sewer connection.
"As the sewer lines were never laid by private builders and entire untreated sewer is being dumped directly in drain in violation of environmental laws / NGT orders.
"Ghaziabad Development Authority as the development authority did not check provisioning of these basic facilities at the time of according clearances for occupation to them," the plea had said.
