Condoling his death, Panneerselvam said Sub-Inspector A Kalidoss has been suspended and an inquiry is on by a judicial magistrate.
"I have ordered release of Rs five lakh to the kin of Syed Mohammed from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund," he said in a statement here.
On October 14, Syed Mohammed was brought to SP Pattinam Police Station in Ramanathapuram District for an enquiry on charges of extortion and Sub-Inspector Kalidoss questioned him.
Following condemnation from various quarters and protests by Muslim outfits, the sub-inspector was placed under suspension.
