At least 50 MLAs of the opposition Congress were today suspended from the Gujarat Assembly for a day following a heated debate over tabling of Justice M B Shah commission report.
The commission had been set up in 2011 to probe allegations of corruption including wrongful land allotment to industrialists against the Narendra Modi-led state government.
During the Question Hour today, Congress MLA Mahesh Patel sought to know the status of the report.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani stated in his written reply that the commission submitted its interim report in September 2012, and the final report in November 2013.
Patel asked why the report was not made public till now, and dared the government to table it in the House if the commission had given a clean chit to Modi.
Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said the allegations was an attempt by the Congress to malign Modi's image at the behest of the then UPA government at the Centre.
As the Leader of Opposition Shankersinh Vaghela objected to Patel's remarks, Speaker Ramanlal Vora prompted Patel to tell the House about the allegations of corruption levelled against Vaghela himself by Congress in 1997, when Vaghela was the Chief Minister.
The Speaker's remarks enraged Congress MLAs which led to a ruckus. Vora then adjourned the proceedings for an hour.
During the break, Vaghela told reporters that Vora's remarks were uncalled for and the Speaker must always be neutral.
