Sonepat MP Jitender Singh Malik will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, and will instead fight the Haryana assembly polls from Ganaur.
Speaking to reporters at Sonepat, Malik today said he preferred the assembly elections which are due later this year, from Ganaur constituency, which is now represented by Speaker Kuldeep Sharma.
The MP said he had conveyed his decision to Congress high command and it was up to them to take a final decision.
A two-time MLA, Malik was elected as MP from Sonepat in the 2009 parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, former president of Haryana Youth Congress, Chiranjeev Rao today said he is a "strong contender" for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat as he has been "actively involved" in campaigns and developed a "strong connection with the people".
Chiranjeev said he has been strengthening the party's youth organisation in Gurgaon which is an IT hub and had more young people.
Referring to his father, Haryana Minister Ajay Singh Yadav, who was a Captain in the Army, Chiranjeev said his Army family background helped him better represent the region which sends many of its youth to the forces.
Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat is now represented by rebel Congress MP Rao Inderjit Singh.
Chiranjeev is also the son-in-law of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.
