Steady rise in No of casualties in SAIL plants:Steel Minister

The number of casualties due to fatal accidents such as fall from height, explosion, fire and electrocution rose consistently in SAIL plants between 2011 and 2013, Parliament was informed today.
Such accidents caused 21 deaths in 2011, 27 in 2012 and 28 in 2013 in plants of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
There wasn't any death due to accidents in SAIL plants till February 10 of this year.
"Accidents at these plants have occurred due to reasons such as fall from height, gas poisoning, electrocution, burn injury, fire/explosion etc. There has been no loss of property on account of these accidents in steel plants of SAL," Verma said.
Another 36 deaths were reported in Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) in the last there years. There was a sharp rise in toll in RINL in 2012. The firm having its lone manufacturing plant at Vizag that recorded 8 deaths in 2011, 25 in 2012 and 3 in 2013.
The number deaths in the two state-run firms stood at 112 during the three-year period.
Verma said SAIL has taken various measures to avoid the occurrence of accidents which includes conducting periodic mock drills as per emergency plan, enforcement of safety induction training.
Meanwhile, the average annual expenditure on maintenance of different plants of SAIL and RINL during the years 2010-11 to 2012-13 was about RS 5,738.33 crore and Rs 777.80 crore respectively, the Minister said.
Since steel is a deregulated sector, the Ministry does not keep the data of the private producers.
