A solo show by one of the top Indian artists Subodh Gupta was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Art here today.
Vice President M Hamid Ansari threw open the exhibition of works titled 'Everything is Inside' curated by Germano Celant.
Minister of Culture, Chandresh Kumari Katoch called the show "unique" and an "important milestone of NGMA."
"Subodh who fashions art of items like pots pans, thalis and tyres of bicycles has given us the idea of making art out of pieces of ordinary household articles," the Minister said after inauguration.
She referred to the artist's work of a hut made of cow dung and said it reminded her of the houses she had seen as a girl in parts of Rajasthan.
"I thought it was a unique idea to construct houses out of old tyres ," said Katoch who said it was a tremendous idea to emulate, especially to build houses where tyres are used instead of wood and other materials.
Katoch wished the artist all success and congratulated the team at NGMA led by Director Rajeev Lochan.
"This is not the only milestone but we will very soon have a closing ceremony marking the 100 years of Amrita Shergill."Katoch said.
Celant said it was a honour to curate the show in a space of a very high international standard where "Subodh danced with the building"
Gupta thanked the NGMA team and also thanked art connoisseur OP Jain and artists Arpita Singh.
Exhibtion souvenirs including a poster and a portfolio of six of the works of the exhibition along with a monograph on the artist by Penguin India was also released today.
Actress Sharmila Tagore was part of the important artists' friends and family of Subodh Gupta who attended the opening.
Gupta's solo exhibition has been presented by the National Gallery of Modern Art, Ministry of Culture and curated by Italian curator Germano Celant.
The exhibition is spread across two buildings - the ornate Jaipur House, originally built as the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1936, and the museum's modern concrete and glass extension constructed in 2009. The exhibition is on view till March 16 2014.
