Teachers act as guide for life: Sumitra Mahajan

Asserting that teachers act as a guide for life, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said future of the country lies in the hands of teachers and it is important to inculcate moral values in students along with imparting knowledge.
She was addressing a programme held to felicitate teachers in Chhattisgarh's Bemetara district headquarter, located around 80 kms away from here today.
"A teacher never retires. Even after getting relieved from the profession, a teacher acts as a torch bearer for the society," she said.
"It is not easy to become a teacher as it is a challenging task to sow seeds of knowledge and values within students.
"Teachers have a great influence in the life of a student with their knowledge and teaching skills and therefore it's a big responsibility on them," she said.
"Future of the country lies in the hands of teachers. It is important to inculcate moral values in students along with imparting knowledge to them.
"Teachers should focus on imparting quality education and enhancing the learning abilities of students. Besides, they should also focus on sports along with studies," she added.
On the occasion, 26 retired teachers, 20 meritorious students, two divyang students (differently abled) and one national bravery awardee student were felicitated by the Lok Sabha speaker and Chief Minister Raman Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said, it is one-of-its-kind of felicitation ceremony held in Bemetara every year with the participation of local public.
Several schemes and projects have been launched to improve the quality of education in the state where strength of teachers in 50,000 government schools has reached to 2.44 lakh.
Fifty-four lakh students are enrolled in these schools, he said.
Chhattisgarh assembly speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal, state's education minister Kedar Kashyap and MLAs were present in the programme.
