Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, said 47 godowns, having a capacity to store 4,33,500 tonnes of grains, would be built by the state civil supplies corporation at a cost of Rs 500 crore this year.
In addition to this, government would build 15 godowns with a capacity to house 1.25 tonnes through Tamil Nadu Warehouse Corporation, she said.
This initiative of the government would increase the foodgrain storage capacity of the state from 6.33 lakh tonne to 7.58 lakh tonne, she said.
The government has also earmarked Rs 50 crore to computerise operations to monitor commodity traffic from godowns belonging to Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Limited, she said.
