Delhi Police arrested two alleged drug traffickers and recovered 360 kg poppy straw from their SUV.
The banned drug was being brought from Bareilley, Uttar Pradesh and was taken to Punjab. In order to avoid being traced, the duo used to change the registration number plate of the vehicle.
"On Saturday, acting on specific information, two persons were apprehended with a white Mahindra XUV 500 bearing registration number PB 65Z 1865. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Kulwant Singh (51) and other as Rohit Parkash (30). 360 kg poppy straw kept in 18 plastic bags was recovered from the vehicle," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Another pair of number plate bearing registration number UK 07 AS 4984 was also recovered from the vehicle. A case under the appropriate sections of the law has been registered at Crime Branch Police Station, he added.
They have also pasted 'ARMY' sticker over their SUV in order to avoid interception.
During interrogation, Kulwant Singh disclosed that his father Resham Singh had retired as Captain from Indian Army who started working as building contractor. After the demise of his father, he fell into bad company and to maintain his lavish lifestyle, he started smuggling opium and poppy straw, police said.
Kulwant Singh mostly used to carry his wife and son along with him to avoid police checking. Rohit Prakash was hired for loading/unloading of the contraband.
