Police have smashed two gangs involved in smuggling of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) from Bangladesh and Pakistan via Nepal and circulating them in India.
Six persons have been arrested in this connection, including two from West Bengal and three from Bihar.
In a major success, the Special Cell of Delhi police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in procuring FICN from Bangladesh and circulating it in India through West Bengal border.
According to the police, three men including two residents of West Bengal were apprehended at 12.15 pm here today from Indira market, in Malka Ganj.
FICN of face value Rs 5 lakh in the form of four wads of Rs 500 and three wads of Rs 1000 were recovered from them.
The accused have been identified as Mohd Habibuddin Momin (36), Qayyum (32), an interstate FICN supplier and circulator who is previously involved in cases of FICN registered in Delhi and Rajasthan. Both are residents of West Bengal and had brought the consignment to Delhi and one Kamal (24) who was their client here.
"Kamal is a declared 'bad character' of Sabzi Mandi police station here and has several pending cases against him.
"He also runs a betting syndicate and was used to dump FICN in this business, " said a senior police official.
During interrogation the two couriers allegedly told police that they had earlier delivered an FICN consignment of Rs 9 lakh some time ago and has pumped around Rs 50 lakh in the Indian market in the last several months.
"The gang operates from Kalia Chuk area of Malda district in West Bengal. The gang is controlled by one Male who has emerged recently. Earlier there was one Shahjahan who used to do the same business from Kalia Chuk.
"We had raided his hideouts with the help of West Bengal police in the past but faced a lot of resistance," the official said.
