Two graves of freedom fighters, who died during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 against Pakistan, were identified here and the neighbouring country has decided to send a team to find out more cemeteries, official sources said today.
West Tripura district magistrate Kiran Gitte confirmed the identification of the graves at Ramnagar and Joynagar respectively.
"If Bangladesh gives us a list of cemeteries and possible locations, we would definitely try to find them with their help and hand over the mortal remains to them," Gitte told reporters here.
The matter was discussed at the two-day Indo-Bangla collector level meeting which ended here yesterday.
District collector of Brahmanbaria (Bangladesh) Nur Mohammad Majumder said, "It is not an easy task to find out the graves. So we have decided to send a team of freedom fighters, who fought from this sector to find out the graves with the help of the locals".
More than 2,000 Bangladeshi freedom fighters are believed to be buried in remote areas of Indian border states like Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal in 1971.
Tripura, having a 856 km long border with the neighbouring country, was the war headquarters of Bangladesh Liberation War.
The state also accommodated 16 lakh refugees from that country when its own population was 15 lakh.
