Uber has signed a pact with Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) to train and certify over 1,00,000 individuals as commercially licenced drivers on its platform over the next three years, which will also offer them opportunities to be 'driver-entrepreneurs'.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Ambuj Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise, in Delhi, Uber said in a release.
The ASDC is a body set up and promoted by stakeholders, including Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Government of India represented by the Department of Heavy Industry and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
Uber said in less than two years since its launch in India, it has already created opportunities for well over 1,65,000 Indians as driver entrepreneurs in over 22 cities, on their platform.
As part of this first-of-its-kind agreement ASDC would provide driver skills training to candidates along and in accordance with the relevant qualification standards certification prescribed by ASDC, through its network of over 200 certified training partners pan-India, it said.
Uber will provide driver-entrepreneurship opportunities on its platform to candidates that have successfully received the requisite government documentation and relevant qualification standards certification by ASDC.
Uber will also provide access to attractive vehicle financing programmes to purchase their own vehicles, it added.
