India's Ambassador to the UN Asoke Mukerji had proposed at the inaugural session of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34) last month that a UN Peacekeepers Memorial Wall be constructed with the names of all the UN peacekeepers since 1948 who have laid down their lives "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war".
The proposal was recommended on March 13 by the C-34 to the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly that deals with subjects related to decolonisation and peacekeeping.
According to the text of report, "the Special Committee recommends the establishment, through voluntary contributions, of a Memorial Wall at the Peacekeepers Memorial at United Nations Headquarters and requests that due consideration be given to the modalities involved, including the recording of the names of those who have made the supreme sacrifice".
The recommendation when implemented would be a lasting tribute to all the fallen peacekeepers. India's proposal for the memorial is befitting since it has contributed more than 180,000 peacekeepers in 44 UN peacekeeping missions so far.
India had also made a proposal in the C-34 last year to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29 every year.
