According to Swamy, no action has been taken on the public interest litigation filed by him in the Madras High Court although the court has notified the state government on the same.

Swamy had filed his case on September 11, and the state government got an adjournment on September 24.

According to him, there is no need for the government to get an adjournment and no counter affidavit has been filed.

Addressing newspersons here yesterday, Swamy tried to establish a link between the Union finance minister P Chidambaram and the issue by pointing out that Nalini Chidambaram, the minister's wife, is the lawyer of A C Muthiah, chairman of the Spic group.

But political observers here believe Swamy is raking up the issue to gain political mileage among the educated middle class as the local body elections are fast approaching.

The two main contenders for the mayor's seat in Madras are MK Stalin, son of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Chandralekha, general secretary of the Janata Party.

In a strange turn of events, former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha not only decided not to field any AIADMK candidate for the mayoral post but chose to throw her weight behind Chandralekha.

Bitter enemies till recently, Chandralekha has been fighting former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha at every step as the AIADMK supremo has long been suspected of being the main force behind the incident where acid was flung at her face when she was the chairman of Tidco, for refusing to endorse Tidco's decision to divest its stake in Spic when the latter came out with a rights issue.

Surla, the main accused in the incident and still in police custody, while being taken to prison openly yelled to waiting journalists that Jayalalitha and AC Muthiah were directly responsible for the crime.
