Gujral Arrives In Male For Summit

Indian Prime Minister I K Gujral arrived here yesterday to participate in the ninth Saarc summit, during which he was scheduled to have bilateral discussions with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif.
Gujral was received at the airport by Maldives president Abdul Gayoom. He later left for Kurumba island in a luxury boat where he will be staying for the next four days.
The summit will begin today, after which the two leaders would meet to discuss a number of thorny issues concerning the two countries.
Pakistan foreign minister Gohar Ayub Khan, who was stating here for the past two days, said that the two leaders were expected to discuss Pakistan's proposal to set up a working group on number of issues including Kashmir.
India in the past had expressed reservations about the proposal stating that would not be conducive to solve the problem.
The two leaders are expected to meet over lunch today and are scheduled to address a joint press conference.
Sharif will be leaving on May 13 to attend some pressing engagements at home. However, the rest of the leaders including Gujral are expected to carry on till May 14.
