"We are looking at joint ventures in various industry spaces. We will have minority stake in these ventures," Saurav Adhikari, president HCL Infinet told Business Standard yesterday.

The company is also planning a major foray into e-commerce. To begin with, it will sell books and music on the Internet. "This is also in alliance with one of the major book publishing and music publishing players in the Indian market," he said.

HCL Infinet is, however, tight-lipped about the media group or any other company it plans to tieup with.

The company will also offer various travel-related services. "This includes booking of travel options and hotel reservations," Adhikari added.

The company is planning an alliance with a broadband content provider. "With this service, the website will be able to offer streaming video, video on demand and other broadband services," Adhikari pointed out.

At the same time, the company was conducting research on various mobile Internet devices, he added.

Besides, the company is looking at telephone, cable, electric cable and wireless devices as well to provide access to homes and consumers.

On its streaming portal, HCL Infinet will also provide localised content. "We are planning alliances to provide localised content," he pointed out.

Adhikari said the company would outsource the content from agencies specialised in specific vertical segments.

HCL Infinet is also in dialogue with several international partners for alliances in the business-to-business (B2B) space, which will be announced soon.

For e-commerce, the company will tie up with existing portals, content providers and service organisations. "E-commerce being the basis of our service offerings, we are initiating best of breed alliances with existing portals, content providers and service organizations for shopping and travel to offer HCL Infinet customers a world class online experience," said Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and chief executive officer of HCL Infosystems.

"This, along with our cross-spectrum value-added service offerings and our in-depth understanding of IT will benefit both corporates and consumers. Corporates will be able to implement E2E (end-to-end) e-business strategies with speed, skill and finesse and the individual user will be equipped to leverage the Internet in several exciting new ways," Adhikari added.
