Profit-taking towards the later half of yesterdays trading session saw the equities shedding some of the gains made earlier on in the day. The Sensex ended the day at 3835.85, up 30.67 points over the previous close of 3808.18.
Most of the trading activity was concentrated in the index based scrips with heavy FII buying activity in Bajaj Auto, HLL and MTNL. The Sensex opened at 3810.63, which was the intra day low, touched high of 3864.41 before slipping to 3835.85 at close. The BSE recorded a turnover of Rs 966.90 crore for the day.
The ITC scrip came inder heavy selling pressure towards close of trading and closed at Rs 477.50, down one rupee over the previous close. The scrip touched its 52-week high of Rs 492.25 during intra-day trading.
HLL was a major gainer of the day with the scrip touching its 52-week high of Rs 1225 during intra day trading. The scrip closed at Rs 1212.50, up Rs 67.75 over its previous close. Other notable gainers included ACC, which closed at Rs 1116, up Rs 35.75, Hero Honda at Rs 519.75, up Rs 9.75 and Dr Reddys at Rs 225.75, up Rs 6.
Losers in the specified group included Ranbaxy, which plunged by Rs 15 to close at Rs 581, SmithKline Beecham by Rs 13.50 to close at Rs 328.50 and BPCL at Rs 390, down Rs 7.75.
NIIT figured among the major losers of the day with the scrip hitting the lower end of the circuit filter at Rs 367, down Rs 9.25 over the previous close.
The BSE authorities had declared a pay-out on Monday, in respect of AB, B1 and B2 group securities for which settlement ended on May 23.
SBI stood first in the list of turnover by registering the highest of Rs 259.32 crore, followed by ITC Rs 251.85 crore, RIL Rs 176.29 crore, Telco Rs 66.07 crore and Tisco Rs 27.71 crore.
