Share prices turned easy on the first day of the current settlement at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday on emergence of selling pressure.
The NSE-50 index opened firm at 1,091.20 and rose further to 1,096.05. Later, it declined to 1,081.90 and closed at 1,085, showing a fall of 5.20 over the previous close of 1,090.20. The Midcap index, however, opened weak at 1,234.45 and declined further to 1,226.80, before ending at 1,231.60, revealing a loss of 6.70 from the last close of 1,238.30.

The total turnover declined steeply to Rs 1,377.19 crores from yesterdays level Rs 2,082.10 crores. Around 464.74 shares changed hands in 1,33,176 trades. Debentures turnover also fell to Rs 75.33 lakhs from the last level of Rs 82.30 lakhs.
The most actively traded securities were ITC with a volume of Rs 651.28 crores, Tata Tea with Rs 175.59 crores and Reliance Industries with Rs 125.86 crores.
Other actively traded securities were SBI-N (Rs 80.48crs), MTNL (Rs 65.32 crs), Tisco (Rs 33.18 crs), ACC (Rs 25.96 crs), Telco (Rs 20.75 crs), Hind Lever (Rs 16.20 crs), Castrol (Rs 15.38 crs), Bhel (Rs 12.41 crs), LML (Rs 9.45 crs), Gail (Rs 8.91 crs), VSNL (Rs 8.86 crs), Satyam Computer (Rs 7.86 crs), Softsolint (Rs 7.67 crs), L&T (Rs 6.93 crs), Ranbaxy (Rs 6.62 crs), Hero Honda (Rs 6.26 crs), IPCL (Rs 5.80 crs), Colgate (Rs 4.70 crs), Nicolaspir (Rs 4.57 crs), Infosystch (Rs 4.12 crs), HPCL (Rs 3.58 crs) and Bajaj Auto (Rs 3.44 crs).
The top five gainers in the NSE-50 were Cochin Ref Rs 164.45 (Rs 158.35), TVS Suzuki Rs 428.50 (Rs 414.65), Essar Steel Rs 22.30 (Rs 21.80), Oriental Bank Rs 58.90 (Rs 57.70) and Indian Rayon Rs 203.00 (Rs 199.75).
The five losers were IPCL Rs 88.55 (Rs 93.95), MTNL Rs 237.85 (Rs 248.70), GE Shipping Rs 42.55 (Rs 43.95), Bhel Rs 361.70 (Rs 371.55) and HDFC Bank Rs 77.80 (Rs 79.75).
Meanwhile, share prices tumbled down on the Over the Counter Exchange of India (Otcei) on brisk funds offering. The Otcei index opened weak at 98.16 and after moving in a range of 98.17 and 95.76, closed at 96.01, showing a fall of 2.16 from the last close of 98.16.
