Wipro Acer's chief executive V Anantaraman said the plant is expected to commence operations within the next two years. It will have a capacity to manufacture between 100 million and 120 million PCs per annum.

The company aims to combine Wipro's marketing and distribution skills with Acer's technical strength to offer a wide range of products including desktops, servers and notebook home PCs.

The joint venture, which was established a year ago, is expected to gain substantially from Acer's investment in research and development of leading edge Pentium Pro servers and the server management software that runs on them.

Information technology is a major growth area for the Rs 1400-crore Wipro Corporation and accounts for more than half of its total turnover in 1995-96.

Besides Wipro Acer, the infotech group also includes Wipro BT, the 50:50 joint venture between Wipro and British Telecom. It provides very small aperture terminal (VSAT) based services and a range of value-added network services.
