Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: India’s first day at Birmingham 2022

 

The Indian cricket team did lose a close game against Australia. But apart from that, India did well in sports it was supposed to do well. It won in women's hockey, TT, Badminton, Squash and Boxing. Srihari Natraj qualifying for the Swimming Semi-Finals was a breath of fresh air for the Indian contingent where Sajan Prakash and Kushagra Singh failed to move ahead of their respective heats. 

 

In Badminton, India thrashed Pakistan 5-0 without even breaking a sweat so to say. The Indian Women's hockey team too won comfortably, although the margin of victory 5-0 against Ghana, could have been way better. India's only boxer in the fray, Shiva Thapa also beat his Pakistani counterpart Baloch with a unanimous 5-0 win. 

 

The Indian peddlers and Squash players were also brilliant as India's 14-year-old Squash sensation Anahat Singh won her Round of 64 Women's Singles match 3-0. Abhay Singh too won his Round of 64 game 3-0 and both advanced to Round of 32. The Indian Men's Table Tennis team beat both Barbados and Singapore 3-0 each to advance to the quarter-final. 

 

In other games such as Cycling, Lawn Bowls and Swimming, India wasn't really supposed to do great and they did not either. Though India did win a game in Lawn Bowls against the Falkland Islands.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Abhay Singh makes it 2-0 in Squash for India

 

Abhay Singh won his Men’s Singles Round of 64 game against British Virgin Island’s Joe Chapman 3-0 to move into the Round of 32 and make it a 2-0 affair as far as Squash is considered. Earlier in the evening, Anahat Singh won her Rpumd pf 64 game against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ Jada Ross 3-0.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Indian Men’s Table Tennis team enters quarter-final

 

The Indian Men’s Table Tennis team comprising Achanta Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Ganasekaran and Harmeet Desai beat Singapore 3-0 by winning both the singles and the doubles rubber of the tie. By winning this tie, they have now won two games out of two and have to face Northern Ireland in their last group stage game tomorrow. 

 

Though there is still one game to go, by virtue of two straight 3-0 wins, they have entered into the Quarterfinals already. India are the defending champions of the Men’s team event in Table Tennis at the Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: India clean-sweep Pakistan 5-0 in Badminton

 

The Indian Badminton team clean swept Pakistan 5-0 in the Mixed Team event group stage game at the NEC Hall in Birmingham. In the first tie, the mixed-doubles pairing of Sumeeth and Ashwani Pinappa beat the Pakistani pair of IS Bhatti and G Siddique. 

 

After that, the Indian number one men’s singles shuttler and former world number one Kidambi Srikanth made light work of Murad Ali. PV Sindhu then took very little time to overcome Mahoor Shahzad in the women’s singles event. 

 

In the Men’s Doubles, the Indian pairing of Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was too much to handle for the Pakistani men’s doubles players Murad Ali and IS Bhatti. Gayatri Gopichand and Treessa Jolly then finished the game for India beating the women’s doubles pairing of Pakistan in Shahzad and Siddique.

Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, reigning Olympics, world and Commonwealth Games champion proved once again why she is the champion as she won the first gold for her country in the Women's Individual (Sprint Distance) event held at Sutton Park. She clocked a total timing of 55:25. Individually she clocked 9.22 in Swimming, 28:07 in Bike and 16:32 in Running. 

 

Georgia Taylor Brown of England won the silver with a timing of 56.06 while Scotland’s Beth Potter won the bronze with a timing of 56:46

 

Two Indians, Pragnya Mohan and Sanjana Sunil Joshi competed in this event. While Mohan finished 26th with a timing of 1:07:27, Joshi ranked 28th at 1:09:00.

Australia’s Alex Gardner stole the show with her majestic 51 off just 34 balls to steal victory from the jaws of defeat in the first ever game of women’s cricket at the Commonwealth Games. When Gardner arrived at the crease, Australia were struggling at 49-5, chasing a target of 155 to win against India. 

 

Gardner first played slowly while Grace Harris attacked from one end and the duo added 51 for the sixth wicket in just 34 balls. The Aussies lost two quick wickets and India seemed to have made a comeback with the scorecard reading 110-7. The chasing team needed 45 off 34 balls and Gardner stuck on with tacit support from Alana King at the other end as the women in gold and green chased down the target with an over to spare.
