Indian tennis legend Leander Paes on Saturday said he has been entrusted with responsibilities related to India's bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, describing it as a key to his new role in public life. The soon-to-be-constituted Organising Committee of the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will be aiming to conduct the event at an operational cost of Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 crore. According to a reliable source closely involved in the planning of the Games, estimates for ongoing infrastructure upgrade, including for both sports and public utility facilities, are still being worked out to finalise the overall cost of the mega-event. The source said Gujarat has taken the "requisite lessons" from the handling of the 2010 Games in Delhi which ended up mired in several controversies, including infrastructure delay, corruption charges, and cost that ballooned way past the initial estimates. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead a delegation of presiding officers from India to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Barbados in October which will have a session on financial transparency in elections. Birla on Sunday evening chaired a meeting of Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies from across India to brief them about various aspects of the conference. The 68th CPC is scheduled to be held from October 5-12 at Bridgetown, according to a statement issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. The Indian delegation will comprise Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh and presiding officers and secretaries of state and Union Territory legislatures from across the country. India's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games will get a formal seal of approval from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) during the top sport body's Special General Meeting (SGM) here on Wednesday as the country has emerged favourite to host the multi-sport event. The main agenda item for the SGM at the IOA headquarters is the 'Approval to submit a bid to Commonwealth Sport (former CGF) for hosting the 2030 CWG in India, including any incidental actions therewith'. The other two items to be discussed by the SGM are: (a) consideration and passing of the audited statement of accounts for the financial year 2023-24; and (b) appointment of statutory auditor for the financial year 2024-25. Since it's an SGM, the discussion will be restricted to the three mentioned agenda items. India has already submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG with Ahmedabad selected as the host city.
