Layoffs might be the buzz word in the information technology industry these days, but software major Infosys Technologies exceeded its own hiring target and confidently proclaimed that it would honour all 20,000 campus offers made for 2009-10.
At the beginning of the 2008-09 financial year, the Bangalore-headquartered and the Nasdaq-listed firm said it would hire about 25,000 people while the CEO S Gopalakrishan and HRD and Education & Research Head, T V Mohandas Pai, were hopeful that this figure would go up to 27,000.
Pai today said, "For the next year (2009-10), we made 20,000 (campus) offers. We will honour all the offers."
During the October-December quarter, Infosys and its subsidiaries added 5,997 employees on a gross basis. "We have seen a decline in attrition this quarter," Pai said.
As on December 31, 2008, Infosys and its subsidiaries had 1,03,078 employees.
Speaking about hiring trends in the industry, Pai said tolerance for non-performers was non-existent today. In (the earlier) boom time, non-performers were accepted by the industry as there was shortage of manpower.
Now, non-performers, people who don't work hard and whose conduct is not good, are being shown the door. "Cleaning up of the system is happening," Pai said.
