Oracle India has renewed its focus in the domestic market with an emphasis on the mid-market segment.

"The domestic market is huge and presents a sizable opportunity and more so the mid market segment. The business opportunities for Oracle apart from the traditional focus areas like finance, e-governance is now being extend to the mid size market, " Shekhar Dasgupta, managing director Oracle India Pt Ltd, told Business Standard.

He added that in order to address this opportunity, the company had recently launched Oracle E-Business Suite, special edition, Oracle database standard edition one, and the Oracler application server standard edition one.

"Our strategy would be to work closely with our partners who would take our solutions and implement it. The company has close to 200 partners which includes names like TCS, HCL, Sonata and Satyam to name a few," he said.

Commenting on the importance of the Indian market, Dasgupta indicated that that the company has around 41,000 employees worldwide of which 6,500 employees are based in India and have around 6,200 customers.

Derek Williams, executive vice president Oracle Asia Pacific, said: "one of the biggest challenges for the Indian private and public sector today is the ability to scale and cope with the diverse needs of this country. This includes requirements to address an extremely large user base taking into account geographical spread, language diversity and variations in business processes, tax systems and connectivity."

Having worked with the government, partners and customers in India for more than 12 years, he sees huge opportunities to help India meet these challenges with Oracle's latest offerings "" from applications, to core technology including application server and collaboration software.

The company currently derives 40 per cent revenues from the mid sized market. When asked if the company foresees an increase in the revenue contribution with the renewed focus, Williams said that it's is not just the mid size business that the company expects to grow but the large enterprises as well.

"As for the contribution from mid sized sector, we expect the revenues to remain the same if not grow," he said.

The company which is hosting Oracle OpenWorld 2004 here also formally introduced the latest version of Oracle's applications offering - Oracle E-Business Suite 11I.10.

The Oracle India Development Centres which works the company's global software development team, based at Redwood Shores, California, has done significant work in the development of Oracle E-Business Suite.
