Delhi Police developing app to 'convert' old criminal laws into new ones

The Delhi Police is developing a dedicated application for its personnel to display the corresponding sections under the new criminal laws on entering the old sections, official sources said on Monday.
 

"For example, in case of a murder, if you enter section 302 under the IPC, the app will display the corresponding section 103 under the BNS," an official said.
 

Three new criminal laws came into effect in the country on Monday, bringing far-reaching changes in India's criminal justice system.

Melting of Alaska's Juneau icefield accelerates, losing snow nearly 5 times faster than in the 1980s

The melting of Alaska's Juneau icefield, home to more than 1,000 glaciers, is accelerating. The snow covered area is now shrinking 4.6 times faster than it was in the 1980s, according to a new study.
 

Researchers meticulously tracked snow levels in the nearly 1,500-square mile icy expanse going back to 1948 with added data back to the 18th century. It slowly shriveled from its peak size at the end of the Little Ice Age around 1850, but then that melt rate sped up about 10 years ago, according to a study in Tuesday's Nature Communications.

Fed's Powell says more evidence of falling inflation needed before rate cuts

The US central bank still needs more data before cutting interest rates to ensure that recent weaker inflation readings give a true picture of what is happening to underlying price pressures, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said. Data for May showed the Fed's preferred measure of inflation did not increase at all that month, while the 12-month rate of price increases has ebbed to 2.6 per cent, still above the central bank's 2 per cent target but on the way down.

Death toll rises, 87 killed in stampede at 'satsang' in Hathras

Over 87 people died and several others were injured in a stampede at a religious congregation here on Tuesday, officials said.

 

They said the incident occurred at a 'satsang' event in Pulrai village where people had gathered in large numbers.

 

Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, Rajesh Kumar Singh said, "Twenty-seven bodies have arrived in Etah hospital. Among those killed are 23 women, three children and a man."

 

In an update based on reports from the hospital, a district official later said 50 to 60 people were believed killed.

 

Victims, dead or unconscious, were brought to the Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre in trucks and other vehicles. The bodies were laid outside the health centre as people milled around them.

The Maharashtra legislative council on Tuesday suspended Leader of Opposition and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve for five days on the grounds of using abusive language in the House. Danve was accused of using abusive language against BJP legislator Prasad Lad during a discussion in the council on Monday evening. Two children die at shelter home in Indore; Investigation ordered

 Former DCW chief Swati Maliwal wrote a letter  to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing his ministers of making the women's panel a "weak institution".

Maliwal had resigned as the chairperson of the Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) following her nomination to the Rajya Sabha by the Aam Aadmi Party.

In her letter to the chief minister, Maliwal alleged that the DCW staff has not been paid salary for the last six months, the panel's budget has been reduced by 28.5 per cent, the 181 helpline has been withdrawn, and no efforts have been made to fill the vacant posts of chairman and two members.
