Bihar sizzles as mercury tops 44 deg C at several places

Bihar reeled under severe heat on Tuesday, with the mercury shooting past the 44 degrees Celsius mark at nine places in the state, the Met Department said.

 

Buxar recorded the highest temperature at 46.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhojpur (45.3 deg C), Aurangabad (45.1 deg C), Arwal and Dehri (45 deg C each), Gaya (44.5 deg C), Rajgir (44.1 deg C), Ziradei and Bikramganj (44 deg C each), it said.

 

The scorching heat will continue in several parts of Bihar in the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

 

People are advised to avoid heat exposure, keep cool and avoid dehydration, a senior official of Bihar Disaster Management Department (DMD) said.

Wall Street mixed, dollar gains ahead of CPI, Fed decision

The S&P 500 backed down from the previous day's record closing high while the dollar gained strength on Tuesday, as investors turned a cautious eye to upcoming inflation data and the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting.

 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average joined the S&P 500 in negative territory, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq was last modestly green as Fed policy makers prepared to convene for their two-day policy meeting.

 

"Ahead of the Fed the market is fairly certain there will be no rate cut," said Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Seattle. "But in the wake of the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada cutting rates last week, the market is looking for clarity as to the timing."

Migrant boat sinks off the coast of Yemen; leaves at least 49 dead and 140 missing

The UN migration agency said on Tuesday that at least 49 migrants had died and 140 others remained missing after their boat capsized off the coast of Yemen, revising higher an earlier toll from local officials.

 

The boat travelling from Somalia was carrying Somali and Ethiopian passengers, the International Organization of Migration statement said. Among the dead were 31 women and six children, it said.

Protest outside Atishi's residence for Rs 1,000 honorarium to women

The Mahila Manch members staged a protest outside Delhi Finance Minister Atishi's residence here on Tuesday and demanded the AAP government to fulfill its budget announcement to provide Rs 1,000 honorarium to the women of the city.

 

The protesters raised slogans outside the minister's residence on Mathura Road here.

 

"The AAP government announced Rs 1,000 per month honorarium for women in its budget. It was not some poll promise. So, the government should now provide the money to the women," said one of the protesters Safia Faheem.

 

A police officer said the protesters were dispersed and no one was detained.

 

"Some women protested in front of the house of minister Atishi. No one was detained as they were protesting peacefully," said a senior police officer.

The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday that the civilian deaths in Gaza during the Israeli operation to secure the release of four hostages and their holding by armed groups in densely populated areas could amount to war crimes.
 

"Hundreds of Palestinians, many of them civilians, were reportedly killed and injured," said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the U.N. human rights office.

 

"Furthermore, by holding hostages in such densely populated areas, the armed groups doing so are putting the lives of Palestinian civilians, as well as the hostages themselves, at added risk from the hostilities. All these actions, by both parties, may amount to war crimes."
