Kane guides Bayern to 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in UCL Q/F first leg

Harry Kane delivered for Bayern Munich on his return from injury, scoring a goal and helping set up another in his team's 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappe scored Madrid's goal after the visitors had taken a two-goal lead at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Kane had been listed as a gameday decision after missing the team's Bundesliga match last weekend because of an ankle injury. The result left Bayern with an edge ahead of the second leg in Germany next week as it tries to reach the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2023-24, when it was eliminated by eventual champion Madrid. "We are still alive, clearly," Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said. "We are one goal away. We have shown that we can win anywhere. We showed it with the scoring chances that we had against an opponent that we knew was going to make it difficult for us." Arsenal won 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon in the other quarterfinal on Tuesday.

UCL quarterfinals: PSG-Liverpool, Real Madrid-Bayern take spotlight

Football at its very best. That was Arne Slot's memory of Liverpool's richly entertaining meeting with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season. OK, Liverpool ultimately went out, beaten at Anfield in a round-of-16 penalty shootout by the team that would go on to win the competition for the first time, but Slot loved the way his side played and still maintains it was "the best game I've managed in my career." They meet again almost 12 months on, with Liverpool - and Slot - in a very different place. Indeed, the Dutch coach appears to be fighting for his job heading into the upcoming quarterfinal doubleheader with the European champions that starts with the first leg in Paris on Wednesday. A 4-0 loss at Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday was Liverpool's latest poor result of a season that initially began with so much hope after the club's record summer splurge of $570 million on new players on the back of cruising to the Premier League title. With the Reds ha

Real Madrid sweat on Courtois fitness ahead of Bayern clash in UCL 2026

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has torn a muscle in his upper right leg, jeopardizing his availability for a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. Courtois was substituted at halftime of Madrid's Champions League game at Manchester City on Tuesday. Madrid won 2-1 and the round-of-16 tie by 5-1 on aggregate. The club on Thursday did not say how long its top goalkeeper would be out. Andriy Lunin will take his place. Madrid hosts Atletico Madrid in a La Liga derby on Sunday before an international break, when Courtois' Belgium plays the United States in a friendly in Atlanta on March 28. Belgium also plays Mexico in another World Cup warmup in Chicago on April 1. Madrid then starts its Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern on April 7. The 33-year-old Courtois has been a key part of Madrid's most recent European successes, helping to win its 14th and 15th European Cups in 2022 and 2024.

Bayern Munich held to 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen as Dortmund closes in

Bayern Munich came from behind and finished the match with nine players in a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, allowing Borussia Dortmund to close to within nine points of the Bundesliga leader. Luis Diaz, who scored the equalizer following Aleix Garcia's opener, was sent off in the 84th minute for a second yellow card. Nicolas Jackson had received a red card in the 42nd minute. Leverkusen took the lead in the sixth minute after Montrell Culbreath stole the ball off Diaz and fed it to Patrik Schick, who set up Garcia on the edge of the box. The midfielder slotted home with a deflected shot. The hosts defended well to contain Bayern's attempts to come back, and frustration showed when Jackson was sent off before halftime for a late challenge on Martin Terrier. Bayern played with third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich because Manuel Neuer has a calf issue and backup Jonas Urbig was concussed in the 6-1 win over Atalanta midweek in the Champions League. Canada's Alphonso Davies out with injury again, Bayern Munich says

Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies strained his right hamstring in a Champions League win over Atalanta, the Bundesliga club said. Bayern didn't specify a timeline for the Canada international's return, but a similar injury during a Feb. 21 game had kept Davies out for just over two weeks. Canada co-hosts the World Cup with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The 25-year-old Davies had returned in December from a torn ACL sustained one year ago while playing for his country. Bayern also gave updates on goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and forward Jamal Musiala, both of whom were also injured in the team's 6-1 win over Atalanta on Tuesday. Bayern only said that all three players "are set for a spell on the sidelines." Musiala has a left ankle injury. Urbig was diagnosed with a concussion. He was in for injured first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Harry Kane nets brace as Bayern beat Dortmund in Klassiker, go 11 clear

Harry Kane scored twice again and Bayern Munich opened an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga with a 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. Joshua Kimmich let fly with his left boot to score the winner with a volley in the 87th minute on Saturday, just four minutes after Daniel Svensson equalized for Dortmund with a brilliant volley inside the left post. Nico Schlotterbeck put Dortmund 1-0 up at the break, but Serge Gnabry set up Kane's response and the England star got his second from the penalty spot - after a foul by Schlotterbeck on Josip Stanisic - to take his league tally to 30 goals this season. Kane has scored two goals or more for the fourth successive game and is threatening Robert Lewandowski's season record of 41. Dortmund disappointed =============== It's the second painful defeat for Dortmund in as many games after its Champions League exit to Atalanta on Wednesday despite going into their playoff second leg with a 2-0 advantage. Kane heroics prevent Bayern's first Bundesliga loss against Mainz

Harry Kane has rescued Bayern Munich from an embarrassing home defeat to the last-placed team in the Bundesliga. The England forward scored a penalty in the 87th minute for Bayern to draw 2-2 with Mainz on Sunday. Bayern is the runaway league leader and yet to lose a game. The visitors were playing their first league game under new coach Urs Fischer, back in the Bundesliga after enjoying great success with Union Berlin. Fischer was appointed last week to replace Bo Henriksen after Mainz's dismal start. Bayern dominated from the start and Lennart Karl the team's newest star opened the scoring in the 29th when he was well placed for a tap-in to Serge Gnabry's cross. It was Bayern's 50th Bundesliga goal of the season, a record after just 14 rounds of the league. But the home team failed to make more of its superiority and was shocked before the break when defender Kacper Potulski equalized. It was the 18-year-old Polish youth international's first Bundesliga goal in just his second

Union Berlin stop Bayern's record streak as Bundesliga clash ends 2-2

Bayern Munich has finally failed to win a game. Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi struck twice for Union Berlin to hold the Bavarian powerhouse 2-2 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, ending Bayern's record 16-game winning streak in all competitions to start the season. "I've been saying all week that we knew it was going to be a fight today," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. It could have been worse for his team, but Harry Kane scored in stoppage time to avert a defeat. "We won a point today. At Bayern you always lose two points when you don't win, but still, the 92nd minute (equalizer), the mentality, (and) Leipzig lost," Kompany said of Bayern's closest challenger. "So it keeps going, and this record the only thing that matters for me is that we showed we can win 16 games in a row. Why can't we try it again?" The result meant Bayern fell one game short of matching its Bundesliga-record 10-game winning start to the league from 2015. Kompany made just one change to the team that defe

Champions League: Mbappe and Kane star as Real Madrid, Bayern earn big wins

Kylian Mbapp scored a hat trick and Harry Kane netted twice as European heavyweights Real Madrid and Bayern Munich enjoyed big wins over tournament newcomers in the Champions League.
