The government is looking to add up to 13 GW of hydro pumped storage projects (PSPs) annually, over four-fold from current levels of addition, to have 50 GW of such capacity by 2032, a senior official said on Monday. Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of Central Electricity Authority (CEA), made the remarks at the 'Conference on Energy Storage - Driving the Clean Energy Transition' in the national capital. The hydro pumped storage has taken a big leap now, and from this year onwards, roughly 3 gigawatts (GW) of PSPs will get added on an average every year, he said addressing the event organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). "...from (FY) 2028-29 you will find it going in the double digit as well, roughly 10 GW to 13 GW (capacity) getting added each year so that means that multiplied by five times will be the gigawatt hours that will start getting integrated into the systems," he said. State-owned THDC India on Thursday announced synchronisation of the first 250 MW unit of its pumped storage plant (PSP) in pump condenser mode at Tehri in Uttarakhand. In pump condenser mode of operation, the turbine is used to generate electricity and simultaneously as a condenser or a heat exchanger. THDC India is constructing a 1,000-MW (250 MW X 4 units) PSP project at Tehri. "CMD R K Vishnoi has announced achievement towards successful commissioning of India's first variable speed 1,000 MW PSP at Tehri with the successful synchronisation of its first unit (of 250 MW) to the Indian grid in pump condenser mode," THDC India said in a statement. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Monday approved two hydropower projects entailing an investment of Rs 3,689 crore in Arunachal Pradesh. After the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the CCEA approved an investment of Rs 1,750 crore for the construction of 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project and Rs 1,939 crore for 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi District of Arunachal Pradesh. Power generated from the two projects will help improve the power supply position in Arunachal Pradesh and will also help in balancing the national grid, the minister said. The projects will be implemented through joint venture companies between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. For the Tato-I project, the central government will extend Rs 77.37 crore as budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges and associated transmission lines under enabling infrastructure besides .
Torrent Power on Tuesday said it has bagged a 1,500 MW pumped hydro storage project (PSP) from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. Torrent Power Ltd has emerged as a successful bidder and has received Letter of Intent (LOI) from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL) on 17th September 2024 for procurement of 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh Energy Storage Capacity from Pumped Hydro Storage Project, the company said in a statement. Detailed letter of award will be issued by MSEDCL upon obtaining necessary approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) in terms of the tender document on the quoted tariff, it said. THDC India on Tuesday said it has signed a pact with the Maharashtra government for harnessing six PSPs (pumped hydro power storage project) totalling 6,790 MW with an investment of over Rs 33,600 crore. The agreement aims to facilitate the developer in conducting surveys, investigations, preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), and establishing projects in a time-bound manner while adhering to the prevailing rules, policies, and schemes of both the central and state governments, a company statement said. State-owned hydro power giant on Wednesday reported a marginal rise in its consolidated net profit of over one per cent to Rs 1,108.46 crore in June 2024 quarter. The company had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,095.38 crore in the quarter ended on June 30, 2023, a BSE filing showed. Total income has increased to Rs 3,037.92 crore in the quarter from Rs 3,010.22 crore in the same period a year ago. The board also approved monetisation of future cash flow (return on equity) in respect of Dulhasti Power Station or any other power station(s) of the company for 8/10 years in single tranche during financial year 2024-25. Stating that only 40 per cent of Uttarakhand's total capacity for hydro electricity generation is being utilised at present, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday sought the clearance of 21 new hydel power projects with a capacity of 2123 MW for the state from the Centre. The request was made by the chief minister at a meeting with Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal Khattar when the latter met him at his official residence here. Khattar is on a visit to the state to review the progress of Tehri Hydro Power Complex and various urban development projects in the state. Expert committees have recommended the implementation of 21 new hydel power projects with a capacity of 2123 MW to be built on the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers and their tributaries, the chief minister said. State-owned REC Ltd on Wednesday said it will provide a term loan of Rs 1,869 crore for 624 MW Kiru Hydro Electric Project in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. The loan will be utilized for development, construction and operation of the project on River Chenab, a statement said. According to the statement, REC has signed an agreement with Chenab Valley Power Project Private Ltd (CVPPPL), under which REC will provide CVPPPL with a financial assistance of Rs 1,869.265 crore as term loan. The project envisages construction of a 135-metre high dam and an underground power house with 4 units of 156 MW each. CVPPPL is a joint venture between NHPC (51 per cent) and JKSPDC (49 per cent). State-owned power producer SJVN Ltd on Monday said it has received the finance ministry's permission to form four joint venture firms for the development of hydro and renewable projects with a total capacity of 8,778 MW in India and Nepal. SJVN will be the leading partner in three joint venture companies, whereas SJVN's wholly-owned subsidiary SJVN Green Energy Ltd (SGEL) will be the leading partner in the fourth JV, a company statement said. Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao on Thursday stressed on the role of leading organisations under the mines ministry, including the Geological Survey of India (GSI), to build pumped storage hydro power projects and highways. Addressing a workshop, the secretary made a special mention of the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM) for their inputs on assessing the quality of stones being used in the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. GSI data and the recently launched National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR) portal will help developers of pumped storage hydro power project, he said. Rao underlined the vast geological, geotechnical data generated by the GSI over its journey of more than 172 years. State-owned hydro power giant NHPC on Friday posted a 4 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 1,095.38 in the June quarter compared to the year-ago quarter mainly on the back of higher revenues. The consolidated net profit of the company was Rs 1,053.76 crore in the quarter ended on June 30, 2022, a BSE filing showed. The total income of the company increased to Rs 3,010.22 crore in the quarter from Rs 2,886.95 crore in the same period a year ago. The NHPC Ltd is India's premier hydropower company. Its total installed capacity is 7097.2 MW of renewable power (including Wind & Solar) through its 25 power stations including 1520 MW through subsidiary.
Tata Power on Tuesday announced a Rs 13,000 crore investment for setting up two pumped hydro storage projects (PSPs) in Maharashtra. Without sharing a timeline for the investment, the company said the two projects will have a combined capacity of 2,800 MW. Explaining what is a PSP, a company statement said water will be pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir during times of excess energy, and the same water will be used to power turbines located lower down to generate electricity during peak demand. The two PSPs will be set up at Shirawta, Pune (1,800 MW) and Bhivpuri, Raigad (1,000 MW) and generate employment for 6,000 people. The company has been operating hydel projects in the state for over a century, having a presence in Khopoli, Bhira and Bhivpuri. Bhira includes a 150 MW PSP capacity. State-owned power producer SJVN Ltd on Monday said it has been allocated five hydro electric projects having a total generation capacity of 5,097 MW in Arunachal Pradesh. The five projects, allocated by tne Arunachal Pradesh government, are situated in tributaries of Dibang River. They are 3,097 MW Etalin, 680 MW Attunli, 500 MW Emini, 420 Amulin and 400 MW Mihumdon, SJVN said in a statement. The development of the five projects will involve an investment of more than Rs 50,000 crore and will reduce carbon emission by around 1.1 million tonnes per year. The government of Arunachal Pradesh has terminated pacts with various private power developers as they "showed less interest" in executing projects given to them, the statement said. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday directed to make the 100 MW UhlIII hydropower project functional by May 2024 and instructed the officers to complete the tender process for setting up six green corridors by October this year. He said that charging station infrastructure would be set up for approximately 1,600 kilometres length of these corridors, which would also include the cities in the ambit of these stretches. Presiding over a meeting of the Energy Department here today, he also directed to replace the damaged penstock (a structure that controls water inflow) of the power project within eight months. The chief minister said that the commissioning of the project has already been delayed and the officers should work tirelessly to complete the project within the stipulated time. Tata Power Delhi Distribution has inked a pact with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam to get 200MW hydro power supply for meeting its projected peak demand for the next five years during the summer months, from May to September. To promote pumped storage hydro-power projects in India, the Ministry of Power has proposed giving incentives such as tax breaks, easy environment clearance and providing land at concessional rates. The ministry has released draft guidelines on pumped storage projects (PSPs) to seek comments from states and state-run companies as well as private firms within a fortnight till March 2, 2023. Keeping in view the immense utility of the PSPs in grid stabilisation as well as meeting the peaking power demand, a need for formulating separate guidelines to promote PSPs was felt to set the direction of its development, the minsitry said in the guidelines. As many as 39 hydro projects totalling 14,623.5 MW capacity are under implementation in the country while nine out of these are stalled, Parliament was informed on Thursday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Power Minister R K Singh said steps are being taken by developers/government for revival of the stalled projects. "39 Hydro Electric Projects (above 25 MW) aggregating to 14,623.5 MW are under implementation in the country. Out of these, 30 projects aggregating to 13,387.5 MW are under active construction and likely to be commissioned by 2026-27 and 9 projects aggregating to 1,236 MW are presently stalled (as on December 31, 2022)," Singh said.
