JSW MG Motor India is eyeing the number one position in the country's luxury electric vehicle (EV) segment, banking on technological innovation, product launches and a shift in consumer preferences, a senior company official said on Wednesday. The company has already emerged as the second-largest player in India's luxury EV market and aims to take the top position by 2026, he said. "The Indian luxury car market is about 700 units a month. Our aim is to be number one in both luxury and mass categories. The luxury EV market is evolving fast, and our target is to become the number one player in 2026. JSW MG Motor India on Wednesday reported a 55 per cent increase in sales at 7,516 units in December 2024, as compared to the year-ago month. The company recorded its highest-ever EV sales in December and NEV (new energy vehicle) sales accounted for over 70 per cent of the total sales with its crossover utility vehicle Windsor alone clocking 3,785 units, JSW MG Motor India said in a statement. Reflecting on 2024, a company spokesperson said it was a year of transformation with the successful launch of the joint venture (between JSW and China's SAIC) and refreshed brand identity, reaffirming commitment to India's automotive evolution. JSW MG Motor India on Friday announced a collaboration with Vision Mechatronics for repurposing used electric vehicle batteries with a homegrown battery management system for second-life usage in large-scale energy storage. The project with Vision Mechatronics, a technology company in the field of second-life batteries, will initially focus on a UPS backup solution and the first product has been deployed for an industrial facility in Pune to demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of second-life EV batteries. Under the collaboration, JSW MG Motor India will provide EV batteries that are no longer roadworthy, to Vision Mechatronics which in turn will repurpose it into a second-life large-scale energy storage application. JSW MG Motor India will enter the 'accessible luxury' segment with plans to introduce four new energy vehicles in the next two years for which it is setting up a new retail channel brand, 'MG Select', according to company Chief Growth Officer, Gaurav Gupta. The company plans to set up exclusive experience centres in 12 cities across India in the first year. "With MG Select we will be bringing in four new products over the next two years to begin with," Gupta told PTI here. "We will be bringing in fresh, new platforms and products and these will be across the new energy vehicles (NEV) platform. So, it will have plug-in hybrids, hybrids and electric vehicles," said Gupta, however, he clarified that MG Select is not purely an EV channel.
