AI to make telecom networks self-healing, boost services with 6G: DoT Secy

Artificial intelligence will make telecom networks self-healing and improve customer services, telecom secretary Neeraj Mittal said on Saturday. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress 2025, Mittal said that the government is trying to keep up pace with the fast-evolving technological landscape and come up with the organised response as a country along with ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to see the manner in which AI and telecom developments can be harmonised for good. "As we move from 5G to 6G, There is a tremendous role for AI to improve the intelligence in the networks, make them self-healing, move from generative AI to agentic AI, where both in the front end, deep in the network, and in the middle part of the network, there will be a lot of functions which AI will replace, make the customer service better," Mittal said. Govt urges BSNL circles to boost service quality, fix tower power issues

Minister of state for telecom Chandra Sekhar Pemmsani on Friday asked four BSNL circles including UP and Bihar to improve quality of service, resolve tower power issues and take other measures to boost the company's presence. In July last week, Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had asked the state-run telecom firm to add customers and grow its mobile service business by 50 per cent in the next year. During a review meeting of BSNL of all circle and business unit heads, the minister asked each unit to increase enterprise business by 25-30 per cent and fixed line business by a minimum of 15-20 per cent. Govt mandates lawful interception of satcom, bars data flow overseas

The Department of Telecom on Monday issued stringent security norms mandating legal interception of satellite communication services and barred companies from linking connection of users in any form with any terminal or facility located outside the country's border as well as processing of their data overseas. The security rules also mandate service providers to indigenise at least 20 per cent of their ground segment of the satellite network within years of their establishment in the country. The move assumes significance as the government is, for the first time, gearing up to open satellite communication service for the general public and needs to put measures in place to avoid any misuse of the services by criminal elements, especially terrorists. Indus Towers Q4 results: Profit dips 4% to ₹1,779 cr despite revenue growth

Telecom infrastructure company Indus Towers on Wednesday reported a net profit of Rs 1,779 crore for the March quarter, registering a decline of 4 per cent year-on-year. It said the industry developments during the year have only strengthened the outlook for the company and the sector. The company exuded confidence about maintaining the "momentum" by capitalising on customers' network expansion and available strategic opportunities. The revenue for the just-ended quarter came in at Rs 7,727 crore, up 7.4 per cent year-on-year. The Q4 FY25 had a provision of Rs 226 crore for doubtful receivables, aided by collections against past overdue, the company said in a release. Indus Towers Q4 results: PAT rises 32% to Rs 1,853 cr, revenue up 6.5%

Telecom infrastructure company Indus Towers on Tuesday reported around a 32 per cent jump in its consolidated net profit for the fourth quarter ended March 2024. It had registered a net profit of Rs 1,399.1 crore a year ago, as per the company's regulatory filing. The company's consolidated revenue from operations grew 6.5 per cent to Rs 7,193.2 crore during the reported quarter against Rs 6,752.9 crore in the March 2023 quarter. For the year ended March 31, 2024, Indus Towers posted close to a three-fold jump in consolidated profit to Rs 6,036.2 crore from Rs 2,040 crore at the end of the financial year (FY) 2023. The annual revenue from operations of Indus Towers remained almost flat at Rs 28,600.6 crore during the reported fiscal compared to Rs 28,381.8 crore in FY23. Debt-ridden telecom operator Vodafone Idea has surrendered partial spectrum in 900 and 1800 Mhz band that were due for renewal in 2024. While the amount of spectrum surrendered by Vodafone Idea could not be ascertained, sources indicated it to be around 12 megahertz in both bands. When contacted, Vodafone Idea spokesperson said, "Upon assessing our usage and needs, we have surrendered some spectrum in both West Bengal and UP East. We remain committed to providing seamless services to our customers while also focussing on optimising for operational efficiency and future growth".
