The Puri district administration today began the process for closure of 11 hotels in the pilgrim town for flouting norms under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air Act.
"These hotels were earlier served closure notices. Physical closure of five hotels was done today. They were operating without consent to operate from the State Pollution Control Board. The closure was done under Section 31 A of the Air Act and Section 33 A of the Water Act," said Odisha State pollution control board (OSPCB) regional officer Hadibandhu Panigrahi.
As part of the closure drive, the district administration has disconnected power and has sealed the generators of these hotels.
In gross violation of the statutory norms, these hotels in Puri were found discharging waste water of restaurants, including kitchens and toilets, to the sea.
