DRI seizes 25 kg gold from Surat

The consignment of seized gold was removed secretly from the SEZ in the city

The regional unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Surat has seized 25 kg gold worth Rs 6.75 crore from cavity of a car. The consignment of seized gold was removed secretly from the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Surat.

The unit, official sources said, had received intelligence inputs indicating that a luxury car will be used for diverting the imported gold in SEZ in Sachin, Surat on Wednesday.

Following constant surveillance by officers, the vehicle was intercepted under flyover of Sachin-Palsana highway (about 5 km from SEZ gate).

“Two persons inside the vehicle, Bhavesh and Vijay Girase, admitted that the vehicle was carrying 25 kg of imported gold,” sources said.
 

“The total quantity of diverted gold bars stood at 25 kg and was valued at Rs 6.75 crore,”  sources said.

As per provisions of SEZ Act and rules, goods can be imported duty free by SEZ only for export purpose and no diversion of such imported goods is permissible. Further investigation was on in the case.
