BS Reporter Kochi
Kochi metro rail is likely to get the delivery of coaches from French manufacturer, Alstom, by January 2016, said E Sreedharan, principal adviser to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Accordingly, after multiple trial runs of them, the first phase of the metro rail project would be operational by June, he said, after participating in a joint high-level meeting of the DMRC and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), here today.

“The works on metro rail have been progressing as per the schedule and the first phase would be completed by June, 2016. Going by the present progress of work, we are confident of achieving the target,” he added.

The meeting had appointed a three-member committee for speeding up the processes related to the construction of coaches. The appointed committee includes directors from both DMRC and KMRL. The committee would decide on the design of coaches soon and would give the final order to Alstom.

Alstom representatives, who attended the meeting said with the delay in finalising the official order, the delivery schedule for coaches would be delayed. They, however, said coaches would be handed over by May, 2016.

The meeting suggested Alstom to speed up the works and and start delivering coaches by January, 2016. It is learnt the final order would be given this week itself. Earlier, Mangu Singh, managing director of DMRC, expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in handing over the land in certain parts of the metro’s route. He inspected the work at various spots on Sunday.
