Britons may have to pay 'bin taxes' under pilot schemes being rolled out across the country that threatens to slap up to £1,000 a year on households that do not do enough to recycle garbage.

Under the EU laws, Britain could face heavy fines if it fails to take measures to cut the amount of rubbish buried in landfill sites.

Five pilot schemes could slap up to £1,000 a year on households that fail to recycle enough, the Daily Express said. The report said ministers have signalled that the pilot schemes will "help us with our decision about roll-out" and allow local authorities to "set up their own schemes in due course".
