Foreign investors bought a net Rs 169 crore ($31 million) of Indian stocks yesterday for the first time in five days, raising total investment in equities this year to Rs 40,700 crore, data from the regulator show.
Foreigners bought Rs 333 crore of shares and sold Rs 3160 crore, the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said on Thursday. They purchased a net Rs 1,050 crore of bonds, taking total flows into debt this year to Rs 21,000 crore, the data show.
Offshore funds sold a net Rs 347 crore of shares last month and Rs 1,110 crore of shares in April after being net buyers in each of the first three months of 2012. They put Rs 42,100 crore in bonds in 2011. Foreigners have invested Rs 4.851 lakh crore in stocks and Rs 1.417 lakh crore in bonds since they were allowed into the country in 1993.
