Australia has said that it is encouraged by United Nations Security Council support to set up an international criminal tribunal into the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crash in 2014.

According to the BBC, Australia has joined other countries including Belgium, the Netherlands and Ukraine in a joint investigation to push for the tribunal and the prosecution of those responsible.

The flight MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it crashed over eastern Ukraine, killing all on board.

Many say there is evidence the plane was hit by a Russian-supplied missile fired by pro-Russian rebels.

A final report on the cause of the crash by the Dutch Safety Board is due to be released in October.
