All eleven workers trapped underground by a coal mine collapse have died in northwest China, media reported today.

The collapse occurred yesterday in a pit of Liujiamao coal mine at Shenmu county, Yulin City in Shaanxi province.

At the time of the accident, 49 miners were working underground and 38 of them succeeded in fleeing for life, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The reason for the collapse was still under investigation.

The privately-owned Liujiamao Coal Mine is operated on test run, rescuers said, it reported.

China's mines have long been the world's deadliest, but safety improvements have reduced deaths in recent years.
