About 16 kg of seized gold worth Rs five crore was found stolen from the safe locker at the Customs office here, police said today.

While police had earlier said that miscreants had broken open the locker and removed the gold, customs officials said only the gold was missing and there was no tampering.

The gold had been kept in the locker for being produced in the court.

Police said a complaint about the missing gold, seized from smugglers on April 13 and 17, was filed by customs with city Police commissioner Sanjay Mathur.

One of the smugglers reportedly stated during questioning that a customs official had helped him smuggle in the gold in his luggage on April 17, but that he was nabbed after another official intervened.

Investigation revealed the man had given some amount as commission to the Customs official, police said.

Customs commissioner visited the safety locker room around midnight to deposit seven kg of gold seized on April 17 when he found 16 kg of gold missing and filed a complaint with police.

In his complaint, he said the missing gold was worth Rs five crore, police said.
