A vigilance special court today sentenced an Assistant Engineer in the electricity department to two years rigorous imprisonment for demanding and accepting Rs 500 from a powerloom owner for a favour in 2004.
Judge S Mohan also slapped the man with a fine of Rs 10,000.
The complainant, running a powerloom at his home in Amanikondalampatty in the district, submitted that he had reported a faulty meter reading on the meter to the engineer who demanded Rs 500 as bribe to set it right.

The man then filed a compalint with Department of Vigilance and Anti Corruption which set a trap and gave him chemically-treated notes to be handed over to the AE.
The powerloom owner handed over the cash on June 25 2004, following which the AE was nabbed.
The trial in the case had been on since then and the verdict was pronounced today.
