David Leitch, the director of "Atomic Blonde", said he had approached rock legend David Bowie for a cameo in the recently-released spy thriller.

The filmmaker said the "Ziggy Stardust" hitmaker declined to appear in the Charlize Theron-starrer but the movie featured his songs as a tribute to him after his death, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I think he (Bowie) really responded to the script and that it was about this city and there was music and everything. But at that time, he respectfully declined.

"Then during the shooting of the film, we heard of his passing, so it was even more special to us that those songs remained in the movie," Leitch said.

The film used two of Bowie's songs - "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)," in the beginning of the film and his collaboration with the band Queen, "Under Pressure," in the end.

Leitch said the team wanted the legendary singer to appear in the film in the interrogation scene that frames the plot.

Bowie, who had featured in films such as "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Prestige", died of liver cancer on January 10 last year.
