Baby girl dead, huts of kiln workers gutted in fire

An 18 months old girl was charred to death and eight huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out near a brick kiln in Dhondawavali in the district yesterday.

Assistant police inspector G K Matondkar of Ganeshpuri police station said the child was identified as Meenakshi Dilip Lokhande.

The fire started at around 3 pm in the quarters where the kiln workers lived after a kerosene lamp fell inside one of the huts, police said.

Before the fire brigade doused the flames, it had claimed the girl's life and destroyed eight huts.

Atavists of Shramajivi Sanghatana staged a protest at the tehsil office over the incident.
