A Chinese woman doctor accused of trafficking seven "sick" babies today went on trial in northwest China.

Zhang Shuxia, a doctor with Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, allegedly sold seven babies, one of whom died, to traffickers after persuading their parents to give up their "sick" newborns.

On July 20, a mother reported to police suspecting her baby had been abducted. She said Zhang falsely claimed that her child had a congenital disease, but was later found in a good condition in neighbouring Henan province.

Two other babies were also rescued from neighbouring Shanxi Province and Shandong Province in east China after their mother complained to the police, the Weinan Intermediate People's Court heard.

Nine suspects were detained in August, including Zhang. The hospital's president, two other senior hospital managers and three county officials were dismissed over the matter, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Police have since received more reports and investigated six cases which may have involved Zhang.
