One person was allegedly beaten to death by villagers at Perumakulam in the district for stealing from a temple, police said.
Kannan with the help of another man broke open the door of the Sudalai Madasamy temple in wee hours of today and stole some articles from there.
Some villagers noticed them when they were coming out of temple after the theft.
When the duo tried to escape in their motorbike, people cahsed them and both fell down, police said.
Kannan was caught by the villagers and seaverely beaten by them while the other man managed to escape.
Though the villagers took Kannan to hospital, he died on the way, police said.
