A grade C scientist of the Bureau of Indian Standards here has been arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the owner of a bottled water manufacturing company.

The Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Bipin Jambolkar while accepting the bribe.

The accused scientist had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the owner of a company that was into processing and marketing of bottled water, according to an ACB statement.

The licence of the company, located in the neighbouring Wardha district, had expired in April last year, despite which it had kept its operations on.

Jambolkar threatened the complainant that he would take up the case to Delhi, if a bribe was not paid to him. Following negotiations, he finally settled for Rs 15,000.

"However, not willing to pay the bribe to the scientist, the proprietor of the firm lodged a complaint with the ACB of CBI in Nagpur," the release added.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered and Jambolkar was caught red-handed yesterday while accepting the bribe and he was arrested later in the evening.

The CBI also conducted searches at Jambolkar's residences, which led to the recovery of documents pertaining to huge investments, which the CBI is investigating, it added.
