BNP leader granted bail

A lower court today granted bail to Bangladesh National Party leader Salahuddin Ahmed who was arrested for entering the country without valid documents but was asked not to leave the court's jurisdiction, his lawyer and a senior police official said.

Ahmed, who was arrested on May 11 from Golf Link area and charged under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, was granted bail after furnishing a bail bond of Rs two lakh by his wife Hasina Ahmed and another person who is an Indian citizen, they said.

"My client (Ahmed) was today granted bail but with strict conditions," Ahmed's counsel S P Mahanta told PTI.
 

This was confirmed by East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang.

He said the bail was granted by Addl Deputy Commission (Judicial) B Mawrie but was asked not to leave the jurisdiction of the court and also to report to the concerned Superintendent of Police once a week.

Ahmed was also asked to submit to the court and to the SP his local address of residence until the trial was over, Mahanta said.

Meghalaya Police have completed investigation into the case and a charge sheet filed two days ago.

Even as he is serving a provisional jail terms at the Shillong District Jail here, Ahmed is currently admitted at NEIGRIHMS, the region's only super specialty hospital at Mawdiang diang near here, to get his various ailments treated.

The Institute's Medical Superintendent Dr A Phukan said the senior Bangladeshi politician is undergoing treatment at the institute for his backache and also a treatment for his chest pain.
