Chopped body parts of a man were today recovered from two iron containers floating in the famous Narendra Puskarini, a holy pond near Lord Jagannath Temple in this pilgrim town, police said today.

The decomposed body parts, cut into pieces and kept in the iron containers, were recovered after local residents spotted the boxes and informed Kumbharpada police station here, City DSP Prabhat Routray said.

Efforts are on to establish the identity of the victim, aged between 35 and 40, he said, adding that forensic experts have been engaged in the investigation.

It appears that the man might have been murdered somewhere and the body cut into pieces before being put inside the boxes and thrown in the pond, police said.

A case of murder has been registered and investigation was in progress, they said.

Narendra pond is known for the famous annual 'Chandan Jatra' of the shrine of Lord Jagannath which is performed in the sprawling water body in the month of Baisakha during the peak of summer heat.
