In a freak mishap, a teenaged boy travelling by a train was hit by a six-inch long sharp stick which pierced his leg and remained stuck with both ends protruding.

The stick was successfully removed in a surgery performed at a private hospital here yesterday, police said.

16-year old Dhanush Kumar was washing plates near the open door when the stick flung in at high speed pierced his leg above the ankle and the toes.

Kumar of Sethur near Rajapalayam was on his way here along with his brother by the Chennai-bound Guruvayur Express train when the mishap occurred on October 27 near Manaparai.

Passengers who rushed to his help on hearing his screams, informed the railway officials.

G N R Rescue Mission, a non-profit organisation operating ambulances, rushed him to Manaparai Government Hospital where he was given first aid and shifted to private hospital here.

After the removal of the stick, the boy had been taken back to Rajapalayam and admitted to the Government hospital there for post operative care, officials of the mission said.

Railway Police said they were investigating into the incident and deployed police personnel in plainclothes to monitor anti-social elements in the area.
