In the second such tragedy in Tamil Nadu in the past ten days, an 18-month old boy who fell into an abandoned borewell near here died as rescuers could not save his life despite 24-hour long efforts.

The body of D Sujith, who fell into the nearly 200-feet borewell at Kidampalayam village around 5 PM yesterday, was retrieved by the fire and rescue this evening, official sources said.

The boy was stuck at a depth of about 45 feet and efforts of expert teams, including one from Madurai, to rescue him did not succeed.

The region's rocky terrain posed a challenge in digging a parallel pit. Explosives were later used to dig the pit, they said.

This is the third incident of a child falling into a borewell pit in the past ten days in the state.

While three-year-old Harshan was successfully rescued on April 14 at Tirunelveli, three-year-old R Madhumitha, who fell into an abandoned borewell in Villupuram District on April 6, died at a hospital after being pulled out of the pit which took almost 20 hours.
