A bust of Mahatma Gandhi placed at Duhuria junction here which was vandalised in June last year, was recovered from a deserted field of the town, police said today.

The locals spotted the bust yesterday and had informed the police.

"We have retrieved Bapu's bust and handed it over to the local organisation which had installed it in June last year," Kendrapara Sub-divisional Police Officer Kedarnath Sahu said.

A case was registered under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1974, after the vandalism was reported.

No arrests have been made in this connection so far, he said.

Incidentally, Gandhij's bust had been installed by locals near an Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) shop against growing alcoholism in the locality. They demanded closure of the shop.

The residents of the area had staged a dharna, demanding arrest of the culprits after the vandalism of Gandhi's bust was reported in the area.

In 1934, Mahatma Gandhi had participated in a 'padyatra' in Kendrapara where he spent a night in Garapur on the outskirts of the town.
